London Open 2010

August 26th, 2010

The Berlin Bike Polo Worlds just finished, most of us didn’t had enough time to come down back to reality and heal the wounds: the London Open 2010 was already on the horizon, just a few days after.
Many teams decided to go directly from Berlin to London… I told you Bike Polo was same as drug !

We all met for the registration at “Look Mum No Hands” on friday evening, and after a short night, the 150 players joined at the Newington Gardens to play at least 4 games on Saturday.
Sunday were the “Winners-Losers” brackets

Big Thanks to Jono and Andy (who couldn’t unfortunately join because of his job), for the fantastic organization, to Gabes, Wayne, 14BikeCo and the community that helped out, especially the people that made food for everybody !
That was the first, but the London Open should become an annual tournament that evolves year-on-year to attract the best teams from around the globe.

Now, we can sit down with a beer, hands and legs broken, and while the washing machine cleans the blood off our shirts, watch the first pictures from those 3 days.

Pics taken by Morti are visible here, or on the Brussels Bike Polo Flickr gallery

Roxy’s pictures are here, and the London Open 2010 group on Flickr has been created: everybody can now post its shoots ! More should come…

See you next year in London !

Ready for the Berlin World Championship !

August 10th, 2010

Holidays are a great occasion to travel and meet people. After having visited several times our friends from Antwerp to play with/ against them, we’ll now move for a much farther town: Berlin. And a much bigger event: the World Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships !

More than 90 teams(!): 50 teams, and 40 more that will have to fight in a preliminary tournament for Eternal Glory (and this amazing unique trophy).

Players will come from Germany, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Belgium, of course, but also from Australia, North-America and Canada !
Already, congratulations to the organization and the teams !

2 teams from Belgium (Clemsy/ Antoine/ Stan • Jack/ Sacha/ Morti) will participate: we’ll be there from tomorrow Wednesday night until Monday morning and will try to keep you updated !

Lil’ Throw In Tournament

June 12th, 2010

The Lil’Throw In was a succes! Weather was first really bad, but little by little, the sun came back, with spectators. 42 players, 14 teams from Lille, Rouen, Paris, London and Brussels. It’s all fun and game until someone loses an eye

June 1st, 2010

Sorry lads, this post will not be that funny, but we HAVE to talk a bit about security…
Playing polo isn’t something easy, and falling during the game happens, most of the time without any consequences: it hurts but it’s OK, you like pain (don’t you?) and you’re quickly back in the game.

But sometimes, it can go wrong, and this is specially sad when an accident could be avoided.

Rush Hour in Utrecht

May 21st, 2010

Shot in Utrecht (Netherlands), “this is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at 8.30am.
(…) The non-fatal injury rate for the USA is about 30 times higher than for the Netherlands.”

See how many cyclists, tramways, bus…

Injury rate per million km cycled: USA 37.5 – NL 1.4

Fatality rate per 100 million km cycled: USA 5.8- NL 1.1

A rider from Brussels in the “Velo” book

May 13th, 2010

Last week-end, I found the book “Velo”, wich gives a large view on that culture we make and love. Inside of it, bike-messenger portraits, illustrations, vintage pictures, Alley Cat races photographies…

Et puis, page 85, une silhouette familière

… and at p.85, I recognized someone !

Hey, Kardama !

Press, magazines, TV, now books… What media haven’t the Brussels riders touched yet?
